Becoming Through Coffee: The Story Behind the Development Lot

Becoming Through Coffee: The Story Behind the Development Lot

Some coffees are crafted for complexity. Others, for consistency.
The Development Lot was created for something deeper: possibility.

At the heart of this fruit-forward community coffee is the Young Coffee Alliance (YCA) — a part of the Young Producer Program designed by our importer and exporter, Unblended Coffee, to support the next generation of producers who’ve made a deliberate choice to pursue coffee as a career. These are young farmers who’ve committed to their craft, not by chance, but by choice — and they’re shaping the future of coffee from the ground up.

    A Place to Practice

Fermentation is both science and art. For many young producers, it can be intimidating to experiment when every lot carries the pressure of income, reputation, and stability. That’s where the Development Lot comes in.

This coffee is made up of many small experimental batches — each one an opportunity for a producer to try something new, to test a theory, to learn. By combining these lots into a single, guaranteed-sale offering, producers can safely explore fermentation techniques without the financial risk of going it alone. It’s a collective effort — a shared space for growth.

A Flavor That Reflects the Process

The result is a versatile, fruit-driven coffee with a consistent profile:
dark chocolate, cacao nibs, a round body, and a lingering fruity finish. Our roast of this beautiful coffee comes through with peanut butter cups, strawberry, pomegranate, and honeydew melon specifically. Whether enjoyed as a single-origin release or a vibrant blend component, the Development Lot holds its own — not just because of how it tastes, but because of what it represents.

    A Lot With Intention

This lot isn't just about what’s in the cup. It’s about creating room for experimentation, education, and empowerment. Every batch is a step forward — for the producer who processed it, and for the wider community learning alongside them.

With each new harvest, the Development Lot becomes more than a product — it becomes a reflection of what’s possible when young producers are given the tools, trust, and space to grow. We appreciate you joining us on this journey.

Fermentation doesn’t introduce new flavors that weren’t already in the coffee. It modifies what’s already there, often in subtle but measurable ways..
