Origin: Waghi Valley, Western Province Process: Washed Varietal: Arusha, Caturra, Catimor, Typica, Bourbon Imported by: Balzac Brothers
Papua New Guinea produces a lot of underrepresented coffees, and this release from Kuta Mill is a beautiful window into the potential of the highland growing region. Nestled in the Western Highlands Province, the Waghi is part of a network of interlocking valleys—alongside Baiyer, Lai, Kaugel, and Nebilyer—that thrive with volcanic soil, shade-grown trees, and elevations ranging from 1,400 to 2,200 meters above sea level, the highest in the country.
This particular lot is grown at 1,600 meters within designated conservation areas and features a mix of Bourbon, Typica, Caturra, Catimor, and Arusha varieties. Cherries are fully washed using a meticulous three-stage washing process, then sun- dried and conditioned at the Kuta Dry Mill. Final processing includes density sorting, size grading, color sorting, and hand selection to ensure consistent quality.
Through shade growing and detailed sorting, you can expect a clean, classic profile that makes an easy routine sipper.

Kuta Mill is managed by Brian Leahy, whose family has been a part of Papua New Guinea’s coffee history for many decades. The Leahys are descendants of the Australian Leahy brothers, who first arrived in the 1930s in search of gold—and instead helped pioneer coffee farming in the Western Highlands. Brian continues that legacy today, overseeing processing and quality at Kuta, while investing deeply in both sustainability and community.
Located between the Ulga and Kolga tribes, the mill operates as neutral ground, fostering peace and partnership in a region once marked by tribal conflict. Local farmers are paid premiums for high-quality cherry, and post-harvest bonus payments are offered to those who consistently deliver. Kuta’s impact also extends beyond coffee: initiatives include classroom construction, profit-sharing models, 25,000–30,000 annual seedling distributions, and sustainable composting systems powered by coffee pulp and vermiculture.
