Rwanda Shangi Hills - Washed

Size

Overall Impression: Classic, Comforting, Solid

This specialty lot of Rwandan has elements of a light roast African coffee - some red currant, herbal, light fruit notes but it has a wonderful texture and dark chocolate backbone that round it out as a perfect fit for a classic, drinkable cup of coffee. It has a little more mouthfeel and body than we would typically expect in a washed process Rwandan and it works really well in the end cup. We like this coffee as a drip or French press in particular!

About this Coffee

About Shangi Hills:

Shangi Hills Coffee Washing station was built in 2016, but was barely operational during those years because the previous owner struggled with proper management and access to the right markets. Fidele Ndagijimana acquired the station at the beginning of 2022. The station processed over 4 containers worth of coffee cherries after accessing RTC market, and the new management is working tirelessly to mobilize farmers and encourage them to take care of their coffee trees again. A station located at the shores of lake Kivu, RTC will continue to work with Fidele to support the 556 farmers surrounding the station and help revitalize the coffee farms in the area.

Who is RTC?

Rwanda Trading Company was established in 2009 as a vehicle for positive social impact. consistent commitment to securing economic freedom and security for smallholder farmers by building resilient, transparent supply chains. RTC processes and exports 25 percent of Rwanda’s annual coffee production. The group owns and operates sixteen wet mills and works directly with farmers throughout Rwanda – buying, milling, processing and marketing their coffees – while investing in producing communities through agribusiness training programs. Since 2013, these programs, which focus on cultivation innovation and reducing costs of production, have resulted in an 86 percent increase in farm revenue for highly collaborative effort, which fuels sustainable economic stability from the ground up.
