Baristas are the face of the specialty coffee industry and comprehensive training is essential for not only high quality coffee, but for representing the hands that came before them and creating value seed-to-cup.

Whether you’re pursuing a career in coffee for the first time, want to level up your current barista skills, or simply want a deeper understanding of the craft, this course is designed for all curious minds and no experience is necessary.

Click the tabs to learn more!

This beginner-level course is designed to build a strong foundation in coffee knowledge and professional barista skills. Through the lens of hospitality and service, you’ll learn about coffee’s value chain, commercial espresso equipment and maintenance, sensory evaluation, recipe creation, espresso extraction, espresso preparation, milk steaming, and how we approach the industry's most common beverages.

While the technical skills learned reflect those in a Specialty Coffee Association Level 1, the amount of espresso theory covered in the class is slightly more advanced than your average beginner's coffee class. We find this gives our students an advantage in their own journeys to brew better coffee. Attendees will receive a certificate of completion in our professional class!

    Experience:
    • An abbreviated discussion of the seed-to-cup journey including coffee harvesting, processing, and roasting
    • Foundational insight into the many variables that impact coffee quality and how baristas and cafe managers design a system and recipe around them
    • Taste and analyze under-extracted, properly extracted, and over-extracted espresso at various strengths
    • The professional process of dialing in espresso and how to maintain consistency
    • Practice industry-standard protocols for espresso preparation
    • Work on fundamental milk steaming techniques for latte art
    • Espresso machine cleaning and daily routine management
    • Build confidence in a supportive coffee community
    Who is this for?

No experience necessary - this class is for any and all curious to learn more about coffee. We do recommend this lecture + workshop style classroom for ages 16 and up, as we consume a good amount of caffeine and work hands on with very hot, pressurized commercial equipment.

Can you book for a group?

We typically max classes at 6 students but have made exceptions depending on the group and time duration. If you would like to request a private party/event group rate tailored to your team or needs, please email brianna@secondstatecoffee.com
