This coffee comes to us from one of our favorite coffee growing regions in Latin America: Huehuetenango, Guatemala. La Garita is the name of the lot on Petronilo Martinez's farm that's known as El Aguacatal (avocado). You can take a guess why Martinez and his son, Petronilo Jesus, named their farm "avocado". Located alongside the Mexican border, the farm was founded in 1958 by Petrolino's father in the Huehue town of Hoja Blanca. It is in Hoja Blanca where Don Petronilo de Jesus was elected President of the Agriculture Cooperative to direct the production activities with several people and bring the coffee grown in the area to market.
La Garita is one of seven lots that belong to Petronilo and his very large family (8 children, 23 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren). The lots vary in elevation and microclimates around Hoja Blanca, all representing the quality that comes from the soil of Huehuetenango.
We purchased this coffee from Onyx Coffee and this is our second year working with them. Over the last year, Zapote Geisha, La Reforma, and El Limonar as well as our Coffee Blossom Honey have all come from Onyx. We're very excited about this coffee they've offered us this year and we hope you're as happy about it as we are!
